More and more women are trying to get pregnant at older ages than the past. It’s a known fact that both number of eggs and quality of eggs decrease as a woman ages. I also often see hormonal imbalances, menstrual irregularities, and thin endometrial (uterine) linings. What many women don’t know is that Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can improve all of these factors.
Egg quality - While no one can change the number of eggs you have (you’re born with a certain amount that gradually declines), many factors can influence the quality of the eggs so they are more likely to mature into a healthy embryo, implant, and develop into a healthy baby! Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been shown to increase blood flow to the area so improve ovarian function, and regulate hormones, so this helps improve the quality of the egg as it matures and develops into an embryo. I’ve personally seen this happen in women whose eggs were harvested both before and after a course of Chinese Medicine treatment. Before, they were told they were not developing healthy embryos from the eggs; after, healthy development was seen leading to pregnancy and some women even conceive naturally.
Diet and lifestyle are also key. It’s especially important to avoid alcohol, nicotine, and melatonin, which can all effect either egg quality or ovulation, and it is advised to limit caffeine. Eat a healthy diet, exercise moderately, and avoid or manage stress. I can help advise with all of this.
Endometrial lining - If a woman’s endometrial lining, the fleshy lining of the uterus that builds up to prepare for pregnancy, is not thick enough, it’s difficult for the egg to implant and be maintained. For a good lining, there has to be both a good flow of blood, and enough blood. Chinese Medicine easily effects both. Acupuncture particularly effects flow, and keeps things open, and can also promote the function of organs so they can make more blood. Herbs can also improve flow, and directly promote the increase of blood. Again, proper diet and exercise are also essential.
Hormonal Imbalances and menstrual irregularities - My last blog addressed how Chinese Medicine can often correct all kinds of menstrual irregularities, which in turn often leads to pregnancy. From a Chinese Medicine point of view, this had to do with regulating functions of what we call Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang. In Western Medicine terms, this ends up effecting hormones. Chinese Medicine has also been shown to result in the release of certain neurotransmitters and to effect to pituitary - ovarian axis. Over and over again, I see women’s hormones balanced and regulated without the use of external hormones.
From this simple summary, I hope you can see how profoundly Chinese Medicine can help you if you’re trying to get pregnant. Whether it’s using assisted reproductive technologies, or naturally, don’t hesitate to call to see if we can help!
